CNN.com - EU tells Hamas to disarm, recognize Israel - Jan 30, 2006

How many people really believe this will happen? The west is now faced with its greatest nightmare. A democratically elected rogue quasi state. The Palestinian people have made their bed and now the world must let them lie in it.

All aid should be stopped immediately and the resumption made conditional on the end of attacks on Israel and recognition of the state of Israel.

The Palestinian people are the reason there is not a Palestinian state today and the sooner the world drives that point home the sooner peace in the middle east will be achieved. If the Palestinian People truly desire war with Israel then the world needs to step back and let nature take its course.

Sometimes it is only when truly faced with a cataclysmic consequence that rationality will triumph. Some times not even then.

But providing ANY support for Hamas is tacit approval of their platform and methods and puts the blood of the innocents on the hands of the donors.

It is a simple fact that every dollar of aid to Hamas frees on of their dollars to purchase bombs or bullets. If Hamas must spend every dime it has meeting the needs of the Palestinian people then it will not have enough for bombs. If on the other hand it diverts its resources to buy bombs and bullets the perhaps the Palestinian people will grow weary of the fall off of services and elect a new government or overthrow Hamas.

Hamas has bitten off more than it can chew and can be made to moderate its platform but it will take a combination of tough actions by the international community and quiet diplomacy. The west can not completely isolate Hamas and needs to accept the fact that terrorist organizations can move into the political process. It is however vital that violence as a political tool be emphatically rejected.

Israel itself demonstrates this well with the history of the Haganah and even more so the Irgun and Menachem Begin. Hamas must not be rejected as an organization, only its policies and actions must be condemned. But those policies and actions must be opposed in the strongest non-ambiguous terms.

Many more of Israel’s most famous leaders came from organizations that were once deemed to be terroristic by others.
